Superyacht owners are renowned for pushing the boundaries of design and engineering. With virtually unlimited budgets and vivid imaginations, they often challenge designers to create features that are as eccentric as they are ambitious. However, some requests are simply too impractical, impossible or even illegal to become reality. Here are five amusing examples of design requests that never made it beyond the drawing board.

Superyachts are custom built vessels that try to reflect the personalities and aspirations of their owners. They are often designed to showcase luxury, innovation, and craftsmanship, frequently pushing engineering and design beyond what was once thought possible.

Yet every so often, designers receive requests that test not only the limits of engineering but also common sense. The following examples are drawn from anecdotes shared by yacht designers.

A Horse on a Yacht?
A yacht designer was asked to design a vessel that could accommodate the owner’s daughter’s horse. The horse was to have its own cabin, specially designed furniture, and even a custom-built treadmill so it could exercise while at sea.

The designer had the task of explaining to the owner the practical challenges of housing a large animal aboard a yacht. The design request was rejected, a decision that the crew no doubt welcomed as cleaning up after a seasick horse may have been beyond their paygrade.

A Beach on a Yacht?
One owner envisioned a private beachfront at sea onboard his 43-metre yacht. He requested a design of a small sandy beach by the water’s edge of the yacht. The designer had to point our two fundamental flaws with the request. Firstly, sand is extremely heavy and impractical to carry on a yacht. Secondly, and most importantly, waves would simply wash the sand away overboard. Unsurprisingly, the concept remained just that.

Sharks on a Yacht?
A yacht owner requested that his 90-meter yacht be fitted with a large aquarium filled with live sharks. The owner also wanted a protective cage within the aquarium so that he could swim with the sharks.

Beyond the obvious engineering challenges, the designer had to explain to the owner that sharks require highly specialised environments, such as those found in public aquariums. In additionally, the ownership and transportation of sharks is either heavily regulated or entirely illegal in most jurisdictions. The design idea was quickly abandoned.

An Elevator Mast on a Yacht?
A sailing superyacht owner requested that an elevator be installed inside one of the vessel’s sailing masts. The lift would transport guests to the top of the mast, where they could then enjoy sunset views from a small seating area.

The designer explained to the owner that adding such weight high above the deck would significantly raise the yacht’s centre of gravity, compromising stability and potentially making the vessel very unsafe. The proposal never progressed.

A Monkey on a Yacht?
One owner insisted that his beloved pet monkey should travel aboard his yacht and enjoy the same luxury as everyone else onboard. He requested an entire cabin dedicated to the animal, complete with a bed, seated dining area, decorative artwork, and furnishings that mirrored the owner’s own suite in miniature.

The designer had to explain to the owner that ownership and transportation of monkeys as pets is either heavily regulated or entirely illegal in most jurisdictions. As a result, the monkey’s luxury suite remained a concept.

The Best Request?
As entertaining as these stories are, they highlight something unique about the superyacht industry which is that owners continually challenge designers to think beyond the conventional. While not every idea is feasible, ambitious concepts have often inspired genuine innovations that have shaped modern yacht designs.
