As the festive season approaches, we bring you some interesting facts about the most recognisable character of the season.
He is Very Old.
He is over 1,750 years old and based on a monk named Saint Nicholas, who was born around A.D. 280 in modern-day Turkey.
He has Super Speed.
On Christmas eve, he uses nine reindeer to pull his sleigh to visit every home in the world. In order to do so, he needs to travel at 3,000 times the speed of sound. Fortunately, the reindeer are magical and each year he achieves his goal.
Did Coca-Cola Create his Red Suit?
In 1931, Coca-Cola illustrated him with a red suit for a widely circulated marketing campaign and claim to have created his modern image. However, already in 1927, the New York Times newspaper reported on his red clothing. Even further back in 1885, in a series of Christmas cards, he was illustrated in a red suit. Many historians believe that Saint Nicholas, on whom his character is based, wore red bishops’ robes and this is where the red attire is derived.
He has Real Travel Documents.
In 1927, the United States Government issued him with a pilot’s license. In 2013, Canada officially gave him a passport, making him a Canadian citizen.
He Has Many Different Names.
He is known by many different names around the world. “Santa Claus” is his most well-known name, originating from Dutch immigrants to America. In other English-speaking countries, he is known as “Father Christmas”. He is also known as “Grandfather Frost”, “Kris Kringle”, “Sinterklaas”, Papá Noel”, “Saint Nicholas”, “and “Christmas Man”.
